"So it is with children who learn to read fluently and well: They begin to take flight into whole new worlds as effortlessly as young birds take to the sky." ~William James
I work in the elementary school of a K-12 charter school.
The charter school has been established for a number of years, but the elementary portion of the school is only in its third year of operation. As such, we are still working to build up our resources. However, we are a school of educators who love making a difference in children's lives! We serve children from a wide range of backgrounds, and they are a creative, excited group of students who enjoy learning!
As a Reading Specialist, my main goal is to develop an effective school-wide reading program that helps each student to become a successful reader. In addition to supporting and facilitating the ongoing development of our school literacy program, I also provide reading intervention instruction for struggling readers. However, in order to provide the most effective intervention possible and to support the regular education teachers in successfully providing daily individualized instruction in literacy, additional resources are needed! I plan to use these leveled books to get our school book room up and running. As such, myself and my colleagues will be able to use the books in this set to provide explicit small group reading instruction catered to each individual child's reading level. The books will be utilized daily with students K-5.
My project will make a difference because reading is a vital life and work skill!
In order to help each student to become the best reader he or she can be, I need instructional resources! By having a library of leveled guided reading books to use for reading remediation, support, and enrichment, student reading proficiency will increase!
