Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have a very active classroom! We do stations a few times a week for literacy and math. The students don't have a comfortable area to read or work on their iPads for that station (they sit on a tile floor), so this would be a nice addition to enhance the comfort in the classroom.

Our classroom has been under construction since November.

We were sharing an open space area with four other classes, and this year we had walls put up in November and December. We have listened to construction, been moved for construction in our room, and still have workers coming in and out to finalize the last few things. My class has shown how flexible they are with all these changes and interruptions, and have worked hard through all these changes and have continued to make great progress. I feel they deserve a nice reward for all they have gone through this year. Our room is going through a lot of changes, and I'd love to add a comfortable place for them to read and work on iPads.

My Project

As the past few years have gone by, my floor pillows have been getting fewer and fewer because of things like dirt, lice, etc. This year, I actually had a student urinate on the last two pillows (a complete accident) and they had to be thrown away. The kids are currently sitting on a cold, drafty tile floor in my reading corner. The reading corner is also used as a center for iPad apps in math. The carpet and beanbag chairs will allow the students to sit in a warmer area off of the floor inside of my library area. The headphones will allow them to block out sound when working on the iPads (we currently don't have headphones and you can hear what each student is working on, even when the volume is low). The spare iPad is needed because when one of my 5 isn't working properly and I need to re-boot it, I will have one extra to hand to the child waiting so they don't miss their center time. Students will be able to read or quietly work on their iPads in a comfortable area.

Many of my students don't have books or technology at home, much less a quiet place to work or read.

This will give them a place where they can read or use their iPad in comfort. Many of these kids work very hard, despite their difficulties outside of school. I want them to feel our room is a comfortable place to escape for the day.
