My Students

Short-term superintendent suspensions are given to students who have committed infractions deserving of a 5-90 day suspension. My school may seem like a place of transient anarchy to outsiders, but the reality is these students have made youthful mistakes and are now hopeful to make a change.

Fundamentals Academy students have been given the opportunity to make amends.

I am not only their English teacher, but I act as a mentor, a counselor, and a guide and my students take full advantage of me as a resource. I have helped students deal with their shortcomings and given them the insight and wisdom I have earned as a person who was once in their position. Being that my school is constantly taking in and letting out students just starting and just ending with their respective suspensions, I have had to get creative as a curriculum designer. With the implementation of the Common Core and the standards these students must strive to learn and perform in accordance to, the only way I saw fit to teach within the means of the Common Core while at the same time utilizing the circumstances and accommodations of my school, I decided to turn my classroom into a newspaper (dubbed, "Weekly Fundamentals"), and the students are very excited to write about the things they care about.

My Project

That said, my students are not the most avid news readers. That's where this proposal comes in. Newspapers such as, "The New York Times" and "The Washington Post" along with websites such as "Huffington Post" are great, but not as engaging as needed. Getting students to get in the habit of reading the news is still a work in progress, which is why I wish to get "The New York Times Upfront" magazine into my classroom just to give the students a variety and moreover inspiration in regards to how they wish to structure their newspaper. There are also much more relevant news articles in "Upfront" that will encourage students to write stories on issues and topics that matter to them. Being that many of the students wish to write shorter articles while there are a few ambitious ones that wish to write longer cover-stories, the structure of "Upfront" is perfect for modeling how exactly we can accomplish doing so and the importance of doing so.

By getting this resource into my students hands (in the current situation that they are in), I hope to help each and every student leave my school and their suspension with the inherent habit of staying informed and reading the news.

Moreover, I hope to inspire a handful of those suspended with me the passion for investigating, fact-finding, and writing newsworthy stories.
