Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everyday, an exuberant class of 8th graders come into my Humanities class - usually ready to learn. Some are voracious readers; others still struggle with elementary texts. What can we do?
These students are amazing young adults who do not let barriers get them down!
In terms of numbers, the stats are against them. As kids who qualify for free/reduced lunches, whose family members have never attended college, and whose neighborhoods are the backdrop to frequent crimes, they demonstrate the power of communication, restoration, and community. These guys are definitely go-getters!
Our school has worked hard to build this warm community in our urban setting. Despite being a Title I school, we have leveraged partnerships both within and outside the school to offer our students their deserved, rich education. The emphases on deep learning, differentiation, empathy, and community makes the environment a safe haven for our students.
My Project
Despite the tremendous emotional maturity and ability to communicate and reflect, I noticed that in my classroom, there are many students who do not enjoy reading. In fact, they have difficulty even picking the right book for their level. I think this is partly due to the fact that although we have many books, for now, the books have uninspiring protagonists or settings that my students cannot relate to.
My focus is to redesign the reading area in my classroom. I want to offer an inviting, comfortable, and relaxing place for students to read during independent reading time. I also want to show students that not all books need to come in a text-only form. Yet, I want to show them quality graphic novels and higher-level picture books (like those of Shaun Tan). As we continue to roll out Common Core, I want to show my students that they can engage in deep thinking through books like the ones I have chosen.
These donations will allow the low readers in my class to have more choice.
These books do not look "babyish" so it would not embarrass them. Furthermore, making the area more inviting by adding a soft chair would help break their perception of reading being a chore! Please join me in jumpstarting these kids into a love for books!
