My students need a variety of practice with magnetic letters, letter stamps, dry erase markers and boards to master literacy skills to become successful readers.
My classroom is full of active students, who learn best with hands on experiences. They need a variety of practice with letters and sounds to be successful readers at the end of their kindergarten year. "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, Involve me and I learn." (Franklin)
My kindergarten class is full of happy, active, energetic learners.
Our students entered our school with a variety of backgrounds, experiences and abilities. They come from low to lower middle class income levels. Many receive free/reduced meals, live in public housing, are ESOL students, participate in intervention classes daily, receive speech/language services, live in single family homes and attend daycare or after school programs and 2 of our students receive PTA sponsored weekend meal supplement backpacks. Of the 24 children, we have 12 boys and 12 girls. 7 of our students qualified to participate in RTI (Response to Intervention) language classes, 3 qualified for speech classes, 3 receive ESOL services. We also have 3 who participate in school based tutoring programs. 6 students are reading at or above kindergarten level reading!
My Project
The students will be able to participate in literacy activities that are teacher lead, as well as, provide independent practice, with the requested materials, including magnetic letters, letter stamps, dry erase markers and boards. They will use the magnetic letters and stamps with the easel to review, practice and learn letters, sounds and words. This will assist them in developing the phonemic awareness skills they need for reading words to become successful readers! The materials will provide enticing, hands on, learning activities in a concrete model for our students as they take ownership in their learning.
There are activities we will be able to add immediately, with these materials, to our classroom to enhance and promote optimum learning.
Our school has a limited amount of materials for our K-5 students. Our students are active, tactile, visual and auditory learners. We need to present learning in a variety of ways, to reach the different ways in which students learn. These material will help move us forward in literacy learning.
