Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I manage and teach in a busy Middle School library in Providence, Rhode Island. A frequent request I receive is "do you have Percy Jackson books in graphic?" or "I want to read Through the Woods," (a popular graphic novel). "Or, do you have the Greek classic the Odyssey in graphic novel format?"
My Middle School has a very special group of about 750 readers!!
They come from all walks of life. Many are bilingual, speaking English and Spanish or English and Creole. We have a wide range of reading levels. Graphic novels can help us narrow the reading gap between accomplished and emergent readers by providing books that can be used by all of our readers, and especially including our reluctant readers.
Our faculty encourages reading! Students are allowed time to go the library each day before school and again at certain regular times during the school week. We also use a behavioral reward system to help students build their reading habits.
Our students love to read all kinds of books. They have recently enjoyed other books (mysteries, adventures, fantasies) acquired through Donors Choose. This time, our greatest need is the graphic novel format.
My Project
These new books will help engage and reinforce students' reading curiosity. Many of our teachers promote regular reading as part of their curricula. We have had reading contests including Battle of the Books, book clubs, before school library reading time, and "Readers' Library Lunch."
All English teachers and teachers from other disciplines encourage or require students to read, keep book logs, write book reports and create book presentations. The library is a busy place, where kids are allowed to responsibly borrow and return books as many books as needed. Graphic novels in particular are also a great form of media which students often borrow and can use to improve their education and their lives. Some of the titles I"m requesting include Roller Girl, In Real Life, and Tomboy.
As a library media specialist with many demands on a limited budget, I have a difficult time allocating funds to all of my in-demand genres.
This Donors Choose grant to provide new graphic novels will help our students develop good reading habits, the key to all academic success and success in life!
