My students need materials for reading centers, fine motor lacing cards, rhyming and science books, and iPads and cases for practicing handwriting letter formation.
Our kindergarten kids love reading! Before we start reading centers we chant, "We can do it! We can read!"
Our classroom is in an urban setting.
We have almost 70% low income students in our school overall. My classroom has many english language learners. Our students love to read books and they carefully chose books to keep in their book bins. They are learning to read the pictures, and sound out the words.
My Project
Students will use all of the materials during reading center time. I will read the mentor texts, and students can re-read them later by themselves. Students will learn letters, sounds, and rhyming from the books. When they choose and re-read the books, they will practice retelling, sounding out words and letters, and reading the pictures in a book.
During the handwriting part of our literacy block, students will use the lacing cards to develop their fine motor skills. They will use the iPads to practice letter formation with the program "letter school".
Many of my students are just entering a school setting for the first time.
Some have very limited resources and few books and technology at home. The rhyming books will expose students to rhyming text as well as sounding out words and reading pictures in a book. Students will gain experience with technology as well as responsibility in taking care of electronics when they use the iPads during reading center time.
