Mrs. Blanton from Beaufort SC is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Read Research Create: An Art Infused Workshop Classroom

My students need supplies such as markers, index cards, journals, folders, erasers, and highlighters to help them explore their artistic side during reading and writing workshop, and a horseshoe table for small group work and discussion.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Whose line is it anyway? Showcase the theme of this book with ballet moves. Sketch out the plot using simple figures. Imagine and move as if you are a live oak tree. Write this poem from the point of view of an Egret. Movement, color, energy are things that students need, crave and deserve! Art meets ELA.

Ancient live oak trees shade over classrooms where students are engaged in positive learning experiences that expand their horizons and understanding of what it means to be a citizen in our global ever changing world.

Art smiles from the walls. Students come to a sanctuary where opinions are respected and ideas are encouraged. Art serves a variety of purposes, but it is not easy. Our students go to a Title 1 school in a small town. Some of them have never been to a museum or too far from their neighborhood, yet their potential as artists and scholars has no boundaries. They need to learn how to write for a multitude of audiences and purposes. They should practice reading with a critical eye and for enjoyment. They will evolve. Not from just a citizen, but a productive, progressive citizen with an eye for excitement and a passion and appreciation for the arts. Having authentic learning experiences in middle school sets the stage for their high school, college, and career life ahead.

My Project

My classroom is a place where students can discuss reading, examine each others writing, and work together as a progressive team or alone to become stronger readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. The materials I am requesting will help to implement an authentic art infusion experience. I have requested materials for visual arts like markers, sketch books, and pastels. I have requested materials for a reading/writing workshop classroom like chart paper, markers, and notebooks for student use. The big ticket item that we need is a horseshoe style table where my students can have group discussions, I can hold reading/writing conferences, and students can work collaboratively. This table will add to the other non-traditional seating arrangements I have in my classroom. Students will also use this table to cycle through small group intervention or enrichment. The materials will be organized and used throughout the year making materials that help researchers and artists find success accessible to all my students with ease.

This project will help me as I try to run a Reader's and Writer's Workshop with authentic art infusion.

I want the students to reach beyond the standards, make differences themselves, and cross healthy boundaries. This will allow the students to see reading and writing as a scholarly activity, a leisurely activity, and also a vehicle that helps them to express through an art form and ultimately reach their goals and dreams.
