Why BIG books? There's something spectacular about Big Book versions of good children's books. Children can't resist the urge to touch and hold them, to savor the richness of their detail. Their visual appeal is a hook into their content.
Our students are readers who like to engage with real literature and need large print and colorful illustrations during whole classroom stories and poems.
Each of our Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms would like to have an abundance of Big Books available for shared reading experiences. Our students must gain enriched oral language development through the teacher's modeled reading of Big Books.
My Project
The first purpose of our new Big Books is enjoyment, but these books can also be powerful motivators for learning. These shared book experiences help to model the reading process for readers, encouraging prediction, providing the necessary confirmation, and ensuring the integration of new knowledge. Our kindergarten and first grade classrooms want to create a big book library check-out. Our teachers are going to share all these resources between our classrooms. The most significant feature of our new Big Book library is that students will engage with these Big Books in shared reading and station work.
Enlarged texts allow our students in the classroom to see and react to the words and pictures on the page as the teacher reads aloud. Many of our teachers believe that the Big Book approach is the closest experience that can be offered in the classroom to the family storybook reading time.
We must build our classroom's Big Book library with quality literature.
Research has shown that Big Books are considered to be one of the most effective ways of getting young children involved with print. Big Books support the learning of print concepts, fluency, and comprehension. Providing Big Books in our classroom is a rich source of many activities which promote reading and meet curriculum objectives. Please help us build our Big Book library!
