Raising Readers & Reading Scores!

My students need books! We know that children raised in print-rich homes become readers. My students most often do not have books at home, so they need books at school!

My Students

My students have come to like, and sometimes love, reading! We have read five books as a class so far, and they want to read on their own as well. I am seeking to build a library of high-interest, young adult books.

My students are mostly low-income, urban youth who yearn to read literature that both reflects their lives and transports them to other worlds.

Just yesterday, I brought in a book that I had purchased for a student, and he jumped up and down. He has been carrying it around all day and reading it during every free moment. When I bought another student a sequel to a book she liked, she left a note on my desk saying "You have no idea how you made my day." As a public school teacher (and single mom myself), I simply cannot personally buy books for each student. I am hoping Donors Choose can help me build a classroom library that will engage readers for years to come!

My Project

When students are done with the class book, or in their free time, they are encouraged to read books for pleasure and extra credit. They will be able to check out books from the classroom library and read them. When they are done, they can do an extra credit book review that gets posted on a bulletin board for other students to read and get ideas. I am building a culture of readers!

Donating books makes a very one-on-one and personal difference in a high school student's life.

You never know: the book you donate might be the book that changes someones life! We know that the best way to improve students' reading skills is for them to READ! It's that simple. In order to cultivate readers, we need books! Many of my students are below grade level in reading. Pleasure reading is a pathway to raising their reading skills, which will help them succeed in college and life!
