This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"When people connect with nature, it happens somewhere. Almost everyone who cares deeply about the outdoors can identify a particular place where contact occurred...often the place that makes a difference is unspectacular; a vacant lot or scruffy patch of woods..." Robert Michael Pyle
My eighth graders are beginning their unit on fluid Earth.
We begin with where water is found and how people collect and affect waters quality. At our school we learn science by doing science. The majority of the students have difficulty in comprehending their textbooks. To aid in their comprehension they conduct experiments and build models to make the text come alive and thus their comprehension increases.
My Project
Rain gardens are an attractive green solution to limit the affects of pollution entering the storm water systems in our city. With the use of shovels and rakes my students can create multiple rain gardens around our urban school. By creating these gardens I wish to teach them how to be environmentally literate citizens. To understand that we need to take care of our environment and how exactly to do that, is the lesson I plan to teach them.
The impact that this lesson will have on my students is to make them aware of how they can impact their present environment and also their future environment.
It will get them to become involved in keeping their city clean. This lesson will allow them to see how small things can make a big change. How the simple act of planting a garden can influence the quality of water on our planet.
