My students, especially the boys, need a classroom library filled with more book choices geared toward their interests at levels they can read, comprehend, and enjoy! This will include three grade level sets of Best for Boys, Monster Trucks, Rockets and Spaceships and Submarines and Submersibles.
Race cars, space, and cars - no more princesses, fairies, or Fancy Nancy, complain the boys in my class. My boys love to read, but complain that the classroom library is filled with books that are "boring." My boys, are yearning for a library filled with planes, space ships, and automobiles!
My classroom is filled with eager to read students!
Our class has an array of reading abilities - from students just learning to read; to students that are reading for enjoyment or to learn about a topic in an informational text. Whatever the level, my students love to read!
Our school is in a little town. As a whole, we have built a great community and all students and staff feel safe and welcome every day! Although we do get budget funding, we are a small district and the money goes to necessities like textbooks, consumables, crayons, and pencils.
My Project
My students, especially the boys, need a classroom library filled with more book choices geared toward their interests at levels they can read, comprehend, and enjoy! This will include three grade level sets of Best for Boys, Monster Trucks, Rockets and Spaceships and Submarines and Submersibles. These books will complete my library, maybe for a day or two, before they find themselves in the hands of eager-to-read boys (and girls!) Boys and girls who are excited to read and learn about such topics as cars, trucks, and space. Books do no good sitting in a library, they belong in the hands of readers and that is exactly where these books will be! I envision my students excited to read and learn, with smiles on their faces, and eager to tell me and their friends what they just learned about from a book.
These books will be used every day whether being read independently, shared with a buddy, or used a a read aloud and teaching point from me. Many of these books are also informational texts which will coincide with our writing program, especially during our informational unit where students write about what they know about. If a student is reading about race cars, experience shows that they will want to write about race cars as well. These books will be great resources for writing
These books are needed, not wanted, to make our classroom library complete.
Last school year I wondered why my boys took much longer to find books they liked or always wanted to switch books among themselves. The girls, on the other hand, were quick to find books that piqued their interest and spent more time reading than looking. Well, it turns out that my classroom library, sadly, is geared towards girls! Not to be stereotypical, but my boys need more books of these books that interest them!
