Producing Plants and Understanding Soil

My students need assorted resources, including an Ecosystem Kit, a GrowLab Garden and a Soil Classroom Kit, to help them understand how soil is formed, used, and replenished.

My Students

Soil has always been a world of wonder to most especially children. They love to play in it and get their hands dirty. I want them to know what soil is, how it is used, and how it is replenished. Understanding soil will give students a clearer picture on why we need to treat our resources wisely.

My fifth grade class is located in a high poverty school in Texas.

My students have flourished in science by having hands on experiences. Teaching them skills that may transfer to the real world in the future is important. When they learn these skills that they take home and share with their families they have a sense of accomplishment. They love to help the environment and to be part of a solution to protecting our natural resources such as soil. My students are not the only ones that will be able to benefit from the items being requested. The whole school will benefit from the new outdoor garden that will be planted when the project is completed.

My Project

The resources that I am requesting will help to teach my students what soil is. They will understand that there are many different types of soil that all contain different minerals and substances. They will be able to analyze soils and understand what plants would thrive in each depth will then be able to plant seeds and see them grow and mature. They will then be able to take those plants to an outdoor area and plant them in the ground. They will also be able to see how what they do effects the environment. After the plants are transplanted to the outdoor area they will be able to observe how their new environment flourishes with insects, birds, and animals. Being able to plant a garden is a real world skill that the students will be able to transfer to the real world. The students will learn responsibility and have a feeling of accomplishment when their plants begin to bloom.

Your donations will allow my students as well as other students in our school to see how soil and its composition can create a whole new environment.

Being gardeners will give the students a real world skill that they can take away and apply in their own homes. They will have a sense of accomplishment when their plants have flowered or produced fruits or vegetables. Not only will they take away science concepts from our project but also a sense of responsibility.
