My students need ovens, pans, pizza cutters, books and other materials needed to learn about the process of making pizza and applying it to making our own pizza.
"Oh look...this is a pizza cutter," "Look...I make pizza!" These are the things I listen for as my students are learning through play. Just like our ice cream unit, our topics are heavily based on student interests. When things reoccur, I know I've found a topic our children can learn and explore.
Welcome to Pre-K!
Come on in! We ask that you be respectful to those around you as well as the materials you play with. Language isn't an issue here, we're confident you'll pick it up quickly. We learn through play and exploration so you're required to bring your curiosity and imagination. Have fun!
Our kids are young, ambitious, and curious, but there's darkness lurking about that's much too serious. Pre-K is a time to explore and play, to imagine and create until the end of the day. But the trouble that's looming seems to be blooming. Academic rigor! Academic rigor! They're telling us to grow up much, much quicker. They want to prepare us to be college ready. We want to go to college, but at a pace that's steady.
Our parents can't help us out of the troubles that's lurking; it's not their fault! They're too busy working! It's up to you to help us keep our childhood we're about to lose, you wonderful people, the people of DonorsChoose!
My Project
Our pre-k approach to learning is heavily child centered, play and interest based learning. From year to year, our children learn different things. This occurs because different students are interested in different things. My first year as a pre-k teacher, our students loved robots. We used countless number of recycled materials to create robots.
This year, ice cream was a reoccurring topic that was brought up several times during play. Thanks to DonorsChoose, we were able to bring in resources to learn about and make our own ice cream.
Now, our the reoccurring topic is pizza. my students are beginning to make pizza out of playdoh, kinetic sand, and creating tools to make pretend pizza.
Once again, I am looking to bring in resources such as ovens, pans, pizza cutters, and books to help show students that something such as pizza isn't instantly created when they go to a pizzeria. I want to show my students the process and steps it takes to make the pizza they enjoy.
Your assistance is required to help keep our child-interest, play-based philosophy of learning alive.
Learning about how ice cream is made and then making it was a fantastic experience for our kids. It is truly a hands on approach to learning. I know pizza will soon blow up into a big topic that many of my students will take interest in. Helping this project will bring their interest to life as they will learn how to make their own pizza and enjoy it for lunch!
