Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an urban district where space and funding are stretched to the limit. My band and orchestra students rehearse in the auditorium which we've adapted to suit our needs. The restrooms and vestibule have been converted into practice rooms and an office. It's not pretty, but we make it work.
Although this instructional setting may not be ideal, my students work hard, and they truly enjoy making music together.
Every year, my 5th graders are so excited to begin their journey on their new instruments. And my 7th/8th graders are so proud to perform at our concerts throughout the year.
Their success in my band and orchestra program has helped many of our graduates to be accepted into our district's selective enrollment high schools. Our marching band performs in community parades, and our string orchestra has been invited downtown to perform holiday music at the Board of Education meeting. The program has strong support from the community, the parents, and from our administration. Everyone believes in the importance of a strong music education for our students.
My Project
Through the use of these iPads, my students will have access to some practice tools that could significantly improve their ability to understand and perform more sophisticated pieces of music. The various tuners, metronomes, and music theory lessons/games will allow them to refine their abilities and maximize their practice time.
One app that I'm particularly looking forward to using with them is called SmartMusic. Through this software, students can practice along with recordings of our exercises or concert pieces. While they play, the app analyzes their notes and rhythms and provides them with immediate feedback about their accuracy. It's basically Guitar Hero for their wind, brass, or string instrument!
Students regularly come in to practice during their recess periods, and these iPads will help them take these quick, mid-day practice sessions to the next level.
My students only meet for rehearsal twice a week.
Increasing the impact of a practice session will dramatically improve their preparedness for our full rehearsals and, in turn, our performances.
