My Students

My students are applying citizenship through community projects. This project will identify, measure, map and form teams to fill smallish potholes. Larger potholes will be monitored and officials will be notified on local and state levels. This involves student in government on grassroots levels.

My students range from rural to urban.

This community is a growing bedroom community to Charlotte, NC. We are in South Carolina and have a huge influx of students from across the country. The soci-economics range from low to high. This particular group is concerned about our government and are anxious to act on their concerns. This project is their creation and I wholeheartedly support it. We will be working on Saturdays during their time away from school. I am very excited that these students have taken this project on because this will teach them about citizenship in a way books cannot. We will need shovels, safety vests, warning cones, and bags of asphalt available at our local Lowe's or Home Depot. Students will travel in their own vehicles to map out the potholes. We will require maps and knowledge of their community. Students will become more involved in their communities and I hope this spread to more volunteerism.

My Project

Once students catch the citizenship bug, they will become better citizens. The will be more apt to vote and serve on jury duty. Once they understand government at the basic level, they should be able to become involved at other levels. Learning these lessons while they are Seniors may help them to become involved in college activities that they would never have considered. It is my firm belief that students don't get involved in government or politics because they view them negatively. These types of projects can change negative stereotypes. Students will need safety vests, gloves, shovels, bags of asphalt, and a lot of encouragement.

This project helps students see themselves as part of the solution and no longer helpless as it related to government.

Students can become the change they want to see. Everyone can benefit from students seeing themselves positive solutions to local and state government issues. When students involve themselves in local and state government they see the positive effect their watchdog behaviors have on government. They understand that government isn't their boss but rather government serves us.
