Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Exploratory, exceptional, entertaining, and engaging - these words describe science in our class. Each year my students develop a love of science. Every week we do exploratory hands-on lessons. My biggest challenge is finding materials to use for these exceptional hands-on lessons.
My students are engaging fourth graders who are especially eager to learn when it is presented in a creative, hands-on way.
By fourth grade they have completed so many worksheets, tests, and standardized assessments that they can easily shut down and not engage in learning. Who can blame them? I am passionate about educating our youth and enjoy doing it in a creative student-centered engaging way.
My students attend a Title I school outside our nation's capital. Many live in poverty and don't have yards or gardens to plant things and watch them grow. Their parents work hard to provide for their families. The students often arrive at fourth grade not having learned a love of science. I quickly change their attitude with my enthusiasm and creative engaging lessons. They need visuals and hands-on materials to help them understand the concepts being taught.
My Project
A plant that closes its leaves and wiggles when you touch it! How exciting would the Tickle Me Plant be for students to grow? The students can learn the parts of a plant, how it grows, what it needs and then take it home to keep. The seed assortment set will allow the students to plant a variety of naturally grown plants in Virginia and compare the growth rate of the various plants. They can learn about pollination hands on. Part of our curriculum is learning about the various ways plants pollinate and ferns pollinate with spores. The Fern Mini Marsh kits will allow them to see for themselves how this process works and the Fern Spores will help the students to see how tiny the spores are. The Cross Section Flower Model will help the students to learn the parts of a flower used in pollination.
The excitement of growing and caring for a plant that the students will get to keep and take home makes learning meaningful.
In order to learn a difficult concept like pollination meaningful, there needs to be a personal reason to want to understand. By growing and taking care of a variety of plants the students will take ownership of their learning. Ownership of one's own learning is what creates great students. Help me instill the love of learning science in my students!
