Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Since this class trip involves all of second grade-each class is different, there are five classes total needing funding. They are very eager to learn. Because we are in a low-socioeconomic area students desire and need outside stimulus farther from their own city in which they reside.
Our students are mostly English Language Learners.
Students are warm, courteous, and soak up information like a sponge! They try to please on a daily basis and would be beyond appreciative for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Many will not get an opportunity like this again.
Our school is a Title 1, primary school. We house only TK-3 grade. There is low parental involvement. Our staff works very hard to make sure that their class is acclimated to the highest standards in math, English Language Arts, and science. To that end, teachers are fully credentialed and have received the best training in common core (California State Standards) implementation and reading instruction.
My Project
As stated earlier, our school is fully implementing Common Core State Standards in all three areas of curriculum. Great Valley Museum is a science, hands-on museum that correlates to our Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum. One of our domains in second grade that we teach is called 'Life Cycles' and another domain is called 'Insects.' Here, teachers could align our CKLA standards to our field trip as it pertains to reaching and satisfying those goals and objectives. A plethora of realia could be obtained, and we could put science items directly in our students' hands.
Many of what will be seen or done at the museum can be directly related to our curriculum.
Students will have been provided an immense amount of background knowledge or prior knowledge (depending where our domains fall and our field trip dates).
For example, students would be introduced to a discovery room where they can manipulate objects found in the real-world.Students would have background knowledge in Astronomy and Earth's rotation as well as a flora and fauna presentation.
