My Students

What was your favorite part about Kindergarten? My students love free play the best, and developmentally, at this age they learn the best through play. Using community worker costumes & props sparks more imaginative play & fosters social interaction in a very positive way.

My students are 4 & 5 year olds in an urban city.

They come from all socio-economic & ethnic backgrounds, but they share something that transcends those differences: a love of learning and enthusiasm for play that brings them together through fun learning experiences. We are a public, alternative school in a large school district. We are considered an alternative school because we are Kindergarten - 8th grade, and due to our family/school partnership. My students are always enthusiastic about learning, and especially enjoy the time when they get to build, be creative and act out scenarios with their friends. During this "free play" time, they build social skills and develop language & vocabulary which will in turn help their academic language & skills grow.

My Project

Studies show that when students have a theme, or general idea to guide their dramatic play, they learn about that theme more deeply & engage their brains in higher level thinking, which helps train their minds for higher academic thinking. My hope is that by providing my students with realistic community worker costumes, they will be able to act out the roles that we learn about through books & guest speakers, thereby learning more deeply about our community. In addition, by having a wide range of dramatic play props and costumes, I can ensure that more students have a chance to get involved in creative play, and reach those students who might need a little encouragement to play in the dramatic area. I think these costumes & props will change my students' lives for the better by giving them more opportunities to act on their imaginations, and enhance their social skills by negotiating and navigating the ins and outs of their dramatic play scenarios.

So much of our children's school time is spent on instruction, but at the Kindergarten level, these young students still need lots of time for learning through play.

Your donations to this project will deepen the level of their dramatic play. It will also help my students make connections between what we learn about in social studies to the community they live in.
