My Students

Do you remember the possibilities when you opened a can of new Playdoh? It is one of the first things students grab whenever we have inside recess. But add in all of the educational activities I can tie in with that new can of Playdoh and the possibilities for my second graders become endless!

I teach at a diverse, low socioeconomic school.

I will be welcoming a new group of second graders in August 2014. I have been at this school for fifteen years. The students are always eager to learn and appreciative of the classroom experiences and materials. They jump right into our projects and often ask questions that prompt further research. Art is a strength for many of our students and it provides a doorway to academic content!

My Project

Oh, the endless possibilities of Playdoh and clay! My students will start with the basic projects, such as creating letters to help them practice their individualized spelling lists and creating plane figures and fractions in math. The party pack Playdoh can be used at home to help students practice. But as their skills grow, so will our projects during the course of the second grade year. The students can create Playdoh and clay scenes to tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end. We can photograph the scenes with our class digital camera and create storybooks. Then, we will really stretch our skills into stop motion animation. Students will learn to take photographs of the Playdoh/clay scenes and when added together using a computer program such as Moviemaker, they can create a stop motion animation film to retell a tradebook they have read, show the life cycle of an animal, or teach about the life of their Epals in a country on the other side of the world. How cool is that?

Art is definitely a strength for many of our students.

When an art component is added into projects, students are more engaged from the beginning. Being able to express their creativity while learning about topics in math, science, and social studies is a positive experience for the students. Each of their minds shine and they are eager to share their creations with each other and their families.
