My Students

Every day my students come to school ready to take advantage of every opportunity to learn. The classroom is busy with interactive centers including reading, writing, math investigation and guided small group learning with the teacher. The class is a safe learning environment.

Life science is an important part of the kindergarten common core standards.

Due to the limited funds for schools a workbook is what we have in the classroom to teach the students. Allowing the students to interact with activities about plants as well as grow their own individual plant will not only engage the students but encourages higher level learning from understanding plants and how they grow, analyzing their elements, and comparing the progress of each others plants.

My Project

Listening to a science lesson about plants can keep students engaged for a limited time but hands on activities, colorful charts, and a viewing window which makes it easy to see the roots develop for the students will greatly enhance their cognitive experience. The first book, Planting a Rainbow, will introduce plants, the flip chart will demonstrate what plants need, how they grow and hands on activities are included as reinforcement. The RooT View Far allows the students to watch the roots grow down as they keep track of their own plants from the Seed Kit. The set of 3 books provide information on how plants, animals and people depend on one another in order to survive. To begin the final step of this unit the book Flower Garden will be read to the students. The story is about a girl growing a flower to surprise her mother. The Papermaking that Grows art project will allow the students to use their knowledge to create a flower for Mother's Day.

Each one of my students lives are influenced by what they experience in the classroom.

Because of the low social economical demographics within the school developing valuable life skills outside of the classroom often proves difficult. This project will provide my students with a unit on plants that includes text support, visual models, hands on activities and a connection to home that has meaning to the child and their family.
