Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our classroom is a busy place where students are engaged in hands-on activities and projects. We have created a literacy garden that is an extension of our classroom where students have planted vegetables and flowers. It is a space for reading and reflection, and learning and exploring!

I teach 23 amazing, inquisitive 3rd grade students at a small school (approximately 350 students), which is not the norm in California.

My students are eager to learn, and their brains are sponges that absorb any and all information given to them. Everything is a potential investigation/experiment to them so I strive to provide my students with as many learning and project based opportunities as possible to enhance the school curriculum and students' intrinsic motivation to learn more. The outdoor space we have created this year is one of their favorite places to be. They have brought 2 neglected raised beds back to life by planting and cultivating flowers and vegetables. We are a Title 1 school, and because of our size, funding levels are not as large as some of the other schools in our area.

My Project

Our literacy garden is an amazing place. With the help of this grant, my students will be able to fully utilize this space to read, relax and conduct research. Currently, whenever we want to use the space for reading and reflection, students have to carry their chairs from the classroom to the garden so they have a place to sit. The benches being requested will alleviate some of that and add beauty and functionality to the space. In addition, lessons and activities are conducted in the garden and the seating space is needed so my students can take notes, reflect and observe. They love being outside with nature and have been true stewards of the environment by having the responsibility of cultivating and maintaining this garden. Watering cans are also needed so that each student will have their own! They take pride in showing their fellow students and parents what they have accomplished and are looking forward to nurturing this garden for the rest of the year and beyond!

My students LOVE their garden and would stay out there all day if I let them!

With your help, this grant will make it possible for our garden to become more of an extension of our classroom as it will provide seating for students to read together, have meaningful discussions, and observe the mini ecosystem they have created as insects and birds visit the space.
