My Students

Art competitions rely heavily on the student's having access to digital cameras to enter. The prizes range from art supply giftcards to college scholarships. The cameras available at school do not have the resolution needed to show the potential of the student and the quality of the artwork.

I teach in a high school outside a major metropolitan city in Indiana.

My students are a rather diverse collection. The arts classes are a requirement for graduation and as a result I not only have the artsy students in class but the football players, the great math students, and even the band and choir kids. In my class I have the unique opportunity to show all students from all backgrounds the possibilities with art and their future. I try and make the class as creative as possible and expose the students to many different media so that they are able to find a particular type of art that they love. Even if they do not grow up to become artists I am able to give them memories that will last a lifetime and hopefully a lifelong appreciation of the arts.

My Project

If my students and I were lucky enough to be granted these cameras for our classroom I would be able to teach the students the basics of photography in teaching them how to photograph their work. They would be able to take these art competitions into their own hands and become invested into their future in the arts. Additionally, these cameras have a camcorder capability and that would allow my students to create videos of art processes for the future art students in my class. We can give demos, peer explanations of art concepts, and even create a little video art. These demos could be placed on my website and benefit those students who walk in the room that were absent on demo day. All they would have to do is hop on a student computer and watch the art unfold. In particular I want to setup an Artsonia online gallery for my students that will help them connect with remote family members through their art. This site publishes their art and allows positive comments from others.

Through the use of these cameras my classroom would be able to keep up with the increasingly digitized world.

Classrooms around the globe are going digital and I feel this project would give my students the 21st century skills that are necessary to live in this world. Additionally with the launching of our Artsonia Gallery the students would be able to share their artwork with the world and family members that live far away. The comments left on the work give students a huge boost in confidence.
