Educating in a low income urban school provides additional challenges for the teachers, parents, and students. Providing a valuable learning and safe structured play experience is difficult with limited equipment. All K-8 students deserve a chance to become physically and mentally educated in Physical Education.
My students do not automatically develop skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors that lead to regular participation in physical activity.
They must be taught. Urban schools, like the school I teach at, have some students who are highly motivated, some who are occasionally motivated, and some who care very little, if at all, about physical education. My aptitude as a physical education teacher is allowing me to bridge the misconceptions about physical education at our school. We are a Title I school located in a tumultuous neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. The majority of the students come from low-income families, have language barriers, and lack home stability. These students deserve a quality physical education program. The student population is learning that physical education is quickly becoming as important as their core subjects. My P.E. program deserves an opportunity to improve a child's quality of life by offering quality equipment.
I have requested mini basketballs and large basketballs, beach balls, dodge balls, soccer, and volleyballs to learn fundamental basketball skills. I have also requested pedometers and aerobic steps so my students can continue soaring to new heights physically. The main purpose for the mini/retro basketballs, beach balls, giant soccer, volleyball, fleece balls, and dodge balls is to teach or refine my students manipulative skills. With these resources, I will be able to teach and develop kindergarten through eighth grades dribbling, bouncing, volleying, throwing, catching, kicking and rolling skills. The two eclipse balls I have requested will allow me to teach the unit to my intermediate and secondary students. Many of them never had an opportunity to learn or practice the skill of striking. Manipulative skills is a prerequisite to being active for life, and physical education class is where it happens! The pedometers will track the number of steps each child takes during class and slowly bring our program closer to 21st century learning. The step pack will provide aerobic fitness to kindergarten through eighth grade students. Physical education has the potential to ensure that all students K-8 participate in recommended levels of health-promoting movement throughout the school day.
Your donation to this project will offer students a chance to learn new skills or practice prior learned skills.
Playing with new or different equipment generates curiosity. With your generous donation, all of this equipment will have a direct impact on the lives of kids. Each student will have the chance to play different P.E. games or learn new ways to exercise. All P.E. programs should be outfitted with essential equipment that is age appropriate and easily modified for all learners.
