Pencils are an essential part of every classroom. Unfortunately, my students often come to school without basic supplies, such as pencils. Without pencils and a sharpener, they cannot participate in the lessons and improve their writing skills
Imagine how you would feel if you suddenly had to move to a different country, one in which everyone speaks a language you barely know.
Now imagine that you have moved there before you even learned to read. Many of my students are in this situation every day. My students come to this country for a variety of reasons and from many different places, but all of them share a desire to succeed. They struggle to understand what their teachers are saying and attempt to learn from materials written for native English speakers. They speak Arabic, Bosnian, French, Spanish, Kunama, Thai, Lao, Farsi, Nepali, Vietnamese, Urdu, and Hindi (among others) fluently, but cannot read the textbooks because they are written in English. As their ESOL and Sheltered ELA teacher, I do what I can to inspire them to persevere, despite the frustration of being unable to read or express themselves the way they can in their native language or languages.
We complete many writing assignments in class. My students write every single day. From bell ringers to exit tickets, they need sharp pencils to practice the skills they learn in class. Without pencils, I would have no idea if they understood what I have taught them and they would not have an opportunity to enhance their learning. These pencils would help me to see that every student has the chance to "show what they know".
I often need to provide writing instruments to my students.
At times, it is difficult to make sure they have this most basic tool for learning. With these pencils, I can breathe easier knowing that every day they do.
