This project came to life by an outstanding group of students who are eager to help all the students in the school be successful through tutoring. When they presented this project idea to me, I had no choice but to jump on board to help put their ideas and dreams into motion. Let's make it a reality.
The students have been overhearing their parents, teachers, and even the media talk about how important education is, yet NC is not on track with the rest of the country. They have always been told to try their best, and score as high as they can on their final exams, so this put their minds into action (into over-drive, I must add). This group wants to make sure that all students have the chance to be successful.
So together they developed a plan to put a full scale tutoring project into place for all students to receive the help they need to be successful. This project will reach out and touch every student in the school. These students are already promoting this project school-wide and recruiting other students and teachers to help make their dreams come true. So when we found the student led projects, I shared the planning ideas with them and this is their dream coming to life.
These students will learn to use the skills of team work, collaborative group work, planning, marketing, scheduling, and customer service skills needed to work with all the students. The students will also learn so much in the area of academics by tutoring students in different areas, it opens their own minds up to continue to learn and grow. This type of growth will benefit all students with their goals of higher education after graduation.
Students learning from students has so many benefits other than just academic, as this can help build up their self esteem, help make friends, and just start a system where the students will feel comfortable opening up and sharing among themselves. The students even developed a plan to market the project to students and parents by offering gift cards to the students and parents who attend. The main idea behind this was that this will help make the parents feel encouraged to make sure they can get their students to attend tutoring.
In Their Own Words
We would like to start a peer tutoring program in our school to help all students make the grade and be successful. We are told how important school and test scores are by everyone, so now we have made a plan to take control of these low scores and turn them around. This will make our school rock in academics and team building. Our school is a family, and family helps each other.
Our group will be setting up multiple tutoring locations throughout the school so that we can offer every student a chance to better themselves. Our teachers offer tutoring, but only with limited times since they already have so much to do. So we will jump in and take it to the next level by offering times when students can get help during the morning, afternoon, lunch time, and even before sporting events. We will work together as a team to make sure we have everything scheduled and in place to help.
We all have been helped by tutoring, so we want to help give back. We hear so many students say they need help but can't make the times that are scheduled for tutoring, so we want to make it available to everyone. We think that no one should not have the opportunity to get the help they need just because of a time slot. So if we can make it available all the time, students will have the ability to do their best. Our school is a family, and we will pull together to make sure everyone learns.
