My students need a collection of books including Is a Worry Worrying You?, Visiting Feelings, and Be Who You Are, to better discuss feelings and individuality.
By the end of the school year, I want every single child to reflect on first grade as the year that they were inspired, successful learners. The biggest obstacle to this hope, however, is the reality of lives fraught with challenges.
As mentioned previously, the reality of many of my students is that their lives are fraught with challenges.
Due to heavy and impactful experiences such as poverty and loss, the need to confront a range of complex emotions is sometimes overwhelming.
My kids are inspiring, resilient, and absolutely amazing. In my classroom, the students comprise a community that largely reflects their own: diverse interests, backgrounds, and viewpoints that lead to unbelievable character and self-representation as they challenge each other to see the world in many different ways.
The school in which I work is wonderfully sensitive to the needs of students and staff, providing us with attentive support and supplies for learning. However, budgets are limited, and a variety of materials to more deeply explore the sciences (both physical and social) is a costly desire.
My Project
My students need a collection of books including Is a Worry Worrying You?, Visiting Feelings, and Be Who You Are, to better discuss feelings and individuality. These books will help my students construct an understanding of their own hearts and minds. Many of my students have memories of difficult experiences such as poverty and loss. These books will help all of us, students and teacher, work through such challenging recollections. We will also use sheet protectors to enable re-use of "How Are You Feeling?" charts using dry-erase markers.
Donations to this project will improve our classroom by giving us the tools to construct an understanding of their own hearts and minds.
This will be hugely beneficial to our classroom community.
