Paper, Paper Everywhere, But Not A Sheet To Copy

My students need access to paper and post-its so they can print their work, read articles and annotate what they read.

My Students

While many places wish to become a paperless environment, it's almost impossible to picture a school that does not have access to paper for projects or copies of articles or even just to get work done. But our school will not have a budget for things like paper and toner next year.

My 12th Grade English students are survivors.

Some take Advanced Placement classes, while others take an expository composition class. All of these students have overcome the odds and made it this far. In general, our students do not come from homes that would be called a "print-rich-environment." Instead, these are kids who have made it to 12th grade through determination and will. My classes are one of two graduation requirements. It serves as the gateway to exiting school and I take it seriously, making the class as rigorous as I would want for my own children. One difficulty I encounter is a lack of high-quality reading materials. Both groups need access to supplemental materials that I can print out and paper will be necessary to provide those materials.

My Project

Next year, the line item for additional materials like paper is being eliminated from my school's budget. We won't be able to buy paper, pens, ink and toner. We use paper every day in class. I make copies of high-interest and high-quality articles from places like the New York Times for my expository class. I create and print practice tests and show sample essays for my Advanced Placement class. Both classes use blank paper for planning essays, creating graphic organizers or visualizing and illustrating reading. Students also use post-it notes to annotate their text, to revise their essays and to keep track of information in their reading. Post-its are amazing in how versatile they allow our students' thinking to be. Without them, students will be unable to "mark a text" which is a critical skill for college.

I recognize that it seems odd to request something as humble as paper.

But without this very basic resource, I don't know how to provide appropriate support and information to my students. By providing this basic support, you will enable my students to continue to grow and learn.
