My Students
Our classroom does a variety of engaging activities on a daily basis. It is critical in a French classroom to use all of the acquisition skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Each day we focus heavily on two of the four skills, while attempting to incorporate them all.
My students are Advanced Placement French students on the west side of Cincinnati, Ohio.
We learn in a suburban school setting. However, our diversity rests in our economic differences. Many students come from households where food on the table at night is not a given. Many students do not have materials at home to create creative projects to enhance their learning. In our classroom, economic success should not be a requirement for successful learning.
My Project
Each year, we use the AP theme of beauty and aesthetics to investigate French artists. Each year, the work falls a bit flat. We learn about the artists and describe their artwork and style, however, the students never really engage with the topic. Next year, I'm hoping to engage them in the art by making them create artwork in the style of the artist they were assigned. My students need canvases, acrylic paint and paint brushes in order to create new art in the style of French artists. Everybody will use the same muse, but paint the painting using different artistic styles. Then, using their creations, we can discuss and converse about the meaning of beauty and what mental processes were used to attain it.
This project will allow my students to take a topic they don't typically connect with and make it real.
The students will be able to engage and manually/tangibly interact with the learning process. This will then spark more interesting, creative and engaging conversations within each other and with me.
