Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We currently has 4-5 potential sites on campus that can be developed into various types of raised bed gardens. We would like to establish native plant, fruit, vegetable and succulent garden sites on campus. We believe that these sites could be used as outdoor learning environments.
Students learn best by doing.
Many of our students are English Language Learners. One of the best techniques educators can use to help these students master math and science concepts is to provide hands-on life experiences.
Our population is 91% Hispanic, with 92.6% Socioeconomically Disadvantaged and 39.1% are English Learners. In order to reach these EL students it is important to provide real, relevant and challenging labs and life experiences that will help students completely understand various math and science concepts.
My Project
We have been planning on starting a school garden for several months. We have applied for several grants and have been turned down for all.
At our school we have several vacant sites that would be perfect to set up a school garden. Our students are super excited about the idea. Our Entrepreneur Club would like to help sell extra produce to local independent restaurants to help raise money for our school.
Our students have showed an interest in setting up native plant, vegetable, fruit and succulent gardens. Students would study these beds as part of their Science, Math curriculum.
Math and Science topics will include the following: soil quality and pH, beneficial insects, composting and rain collection. Math concepts can include measuring plots, cubic yard measurements of needed soil, rainfall measurements, measuring and tracking plant growth and total cost of vegetables.
The end result of this project will be, well established sites on the campus where future and current students and teachers can have and enjoy outdoor learning opportunities.
We are currently in Phase One of our project, which includes seeking funding opportunities.
Donations to this project will improve math and science learning opportunities because it uses the 5 E model of science instruction: Engage, Explore, Explain, Extension, Evaluate.
