Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my classroom consists of students observing nature and analyzing it through the lens of a scientist. My students are challenged daily to connect what we are learning to their everyday life and to ask meaningful open-ended questions. I hope they love science by the end of the year!
My students are fantastic!
They are hard-working, diligent, and passionate students who want to make a mark on the world after they graduate. They are continually bombarded with extra-curricular activities and sports, but still manage to be able to come and ask for help before school, during lunch, or after school. My school strives for excellence and tries to push both its students and faculty members to be the best that they can be.
My Project
Throughout the school year, we need heat sources to perform various analyses such as: determining how many calories are in potato chips, manufacturing a heating curve for water, finding the % of salt in ocean water, and determining the empirical formula for an unknown. For each of these analyses we use Bunsen burners and natural gas, which most would assume is inexpensive and easy to use; however, for some of my special needs students and low ELD students they cannot be used safely and the natural gas is actually very expensive. My proposal would allow for each of our lab groups to have 1 hot plate to use as an alternative to Bunsen burners/natural gas, so that every student has the ability to safely perform our labs throughout the school year.
This project will not only make a difference for my special needs and ELD students, but will allow ALL of my students to safely perform our experiments throughout the year.
I feel that teaching lab safety is of the utmost importance and so having a device at each station that safely heats liquids and solutions will help my students reach that goal.
