Remember your many days in classrooms from kindergarten through high school? I do. (In fact I attended the school where I am now a teacher!) Don't you wish you could spend more time outside? This is the goal of our outdoor classroom - a space for all students to engage and learn.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds!
Some were born in far away lands such as Nigeria, Switzerland, Formosa, and Burma while others are attending the school their parents did a generation ago. What do they all have in common? A love for learning!
My Project
We have started work on our outdoor classroom. What can the students do? Students will be able to observe the full process of decomposition with the compost items and landfill activity. They will use tools such as the thermometers to collect data over time. Students will analyze soil samples in and around our campus. The compasses will be used so the students will be able to complete an orienteering course at our school. (This will be awesome!) Students will be able to learn while doing; fun is just an added feature.
How can this not improve my classroom?
Students will have the materials and tools to conduct simple experiments, collect and analyze data, and the opportunity to share their results with their peers and staff. Learning needs to be fun and meaningful. This project can make this happen.
