Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach students with special needs and I want my students to improve on their hand-eye coordination, auditory, and visual aid deficiencies before the next school year. Daily we work on creating a classroom rich with project-based assignments to help them access the curriculum more successfully.
I teach a wonderful group of students in the 6th grade who inspire me to be the best teacher I can be.
My students come from a low social economic class and their parents work hard daily to provide their needs. Unfortunately, very little money is left for school supplies and with so many budget cuts our classroom is in need of many supplies. My students lack the finances necessary to have supplies at home. My heart aches when I hear my students say they can't finish their work because they have no colored pencils or crayons or even a glue stick. I believe each student has the capacity to learn, we just need to give them the resources they need to succeed. I teach science, math, and history and much of my teaching is project-based because it helps my students learn more efficiently and effectively. I am proud of each one of my students and their desire to learn is incredible. I want to be able to provide them with the resources they need to continue their learning while having fun.
My Project
I have a very interactive and fun classroom. My students are able to work independently or in a group setting on projects such as the Earth's Spheres, Egyptian Pyramids, Mathematical Quilts, and even create a learning book about our garden. All of these project-based lessons require paper, glue, and colored pencils/crayons/markers to complete them. Many of them have fine motor and visual deficiencies, therefore, I need to provide them with options that suit their individual needs. Having a projector is a necessity in my classroom because I need to model lessons visually and demonstrate through the use of technology concepts or topics we are covering in class. We have a few more months of school and we have much yet to learn. We will be learning about the River System, Chinese Culture, and Geometry and many hands-on activities will be part of their learning.
My students are always learning new things and as their teacher I want them to reach for the stars.
I believe that they will have a peace of mind because they will not have to worry about the basic supplies they need to complete their work. Our classroom will benefit because these supplies will not only support the learning of my students this school year but also the ones to come in the years ahead.
