Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In the middle of downtown Los Angeles, it is difficult for the students to visualize an ecosystem outside of the city ecosystem. Our school is inside of an old warehouse, with no windows and a small outdoor space. Despite this, my biology students love ecology.

My biology students are energetic, dedicated learners.

This year we have learned our content through a variety of texts, simulations, and activities, but I know they would love to get outside and have a class project. Our school has 4 boxes that appear to have been built for a small school garden that are currently empty. We could use these boxes for our pollinator garden and study the interactions between the organisms. My students also love animals and insects. We have classroom pets that they enjoy having, but to raise a butterfly would be an incredible experience for them.

My Project

We would use these materials in our ecology unit. In this unit the students learn the different pieces of ecology, different types of ecosystems, interactions between organisms, and human impact. With these materials, we would set up and study our own mini-ecosystem and study the interactions between the organisms (plants, insects, animals). We would be able to use the plant boxes that have previously been built at our school but are not currently in use and it would give us an opportunity to spend time outside.

This donation will improve our classroom because this project would show students how science is a real life tangible thing and not just something that we read in our textbooks or on the Internet.
