Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in 7th grade life science is a hands on adventure. Students are learning skills necessary for high school and college in class by improving their organization skills with interactive notebooks, writing abilities in science journals, and hands on activities.
The students in this school face basic life challenges.
There are many who come to school hungry, unprepared for school with basic supplies and clothing. However, their desire to be successful always amazes me! They are dedicated students who work hard for their education which encourages me every day and keeps me coming back with a smile on my face. I end up spending a great deal of money each week bringing food, supplies, and any lab or activity materials.
My Project
The new pencil sharpener will have the students begin each day with a sharp pencil, ready to roll. We will be studying ecology soon and so the students will work in pairs of two to examine the owl pellets. The brains will be used to dissect when we study the nervous system.
The students in my school are inner city kids that do not have the opportunities most kids have.
Giving them a sharp pencil to begin their learning each day helps them to feel supercharged and ready to begin each lesson. Next, having hands on engaging lessons to bring learning to life, always makes a difference for kids, helps them to remember what they have learned. Last, when young scientists like what they do, they become the future scientists that we all need.
