My students need a copy each of SE Hinton's "The Outsiders" for a novel study in 7th grade classes.

My Students

This is a small group class of students with receptive and expressive language disorders. Reading is not necessarily supported in the home environment, and many of the students are from working class or economically disadvantaged families. All the students in the 7th grade level are studying this novel.

I would like this small group of students to experience the same joy of reading this book so that they can discuss it with the students outside of our class.

I have a small classroom library, but not enough copies of this text for all my students, so I would love a new book to put in the hands of each student in this class to care for and get engrossed in.

My Project

We will be reading the entire novel together in class and the students will be doing research about the time period and constructing written responses to the novel. In addition they will be answering comprehension questions and doing vocabulary increasing activities with the language of the text. They are currently learning the RACER strategy for answering extended response questions in writing, We will be practicing this skill along with reading fluency, comprehension, and creative writing activities throughout the novel study.

Struggling readers need to find texts that they can easily engage in, and students with disabilities need to have experiences within the academic world that they can share with their non-disabled peers of the same age.

This class set of books might allow my students to experience and develop a love of reading, and allow them to gain experience speaking and listening with others of their same age about common themes of the book. These include what it means to be a hero, among other themes.
