Out With The Archaic and In With The Modern (and Safe)

My students need sturdy, flat tables. I currently have OLD, AWFUL desks; the desktops are slanted at 30 degrees and are not appropriate (or safe) for labs or other tasks.

My Students

Imagine your task requires you to make multiple measurements, write out a formula, and solve a complex equation. Because your desktop is slanted you have to juggle your paper, pencil, ruler, calculator, and the item you're measuring, since anything you set down rolls to the floor. Nervous yet?

Our school is located in a small, rural community in south, central Idaho.

There are about 400 kids in the entire district, and the Jr./Sr. High are combined together in a single building. Because we're so small, there is typically only one teacher per subject area, and we all teach many different classes throughout our seven-period day. This coming year I'm scheduled to teach 6th grade General Science, 7th grade Life Science, 8th grade Earth Science, 9th grade Physical Science, 10th grade Biology, and Conceptual Physics (11-12 grades). Teaching this many different classes every single day is a challenge, and finding the resources for effective learning activities can be tough!

My Project

I'm a firm believer that a student's physical surroundings impacts both his behavior and productivity within a classroom. The tables purchased through your donations will allow my students to complete their daily work on a neat and clutter-free surface. They will be able to take notes, solve problems, read books, and perform labs without worrying about their papers and pencils and books sliding off their desks and onto the floor. Instead of wasting energy trying to keep their materials in place, my students will be able to better focus on their given task.

These lab tables will make a huge difference in my classroom.

First, they will provide a flat, safe surface on which to conduct lab experiments, take notes, or complete other learning activities. Second, they will allow the classroom to look more neat and orderly by eliminating the cluttered appearance of the rickety, slanted desks I currently have. These tables will be used daily, in every class, for many years to come.
