This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We have an obligation to our students to prepare them for the world, so what better way than to show them a world outside of their own.
My students come from low income households and attend a small public high school in NYC.
They are extremely energetic and love getting their hands dirty with activities, science labs, and group work, which is the best way to learn science. They are eager to develop their knowledge and make real-world connections with the content they learn in my class, as well as what they learn from their surroundings. For this reason, I want to bring them out of their comfort zone and show them a new part of the world.
My Project
Most of my students have never left their hometown, let alone their country. This trip, along with the year long curriculum that goes with the program, may just be the ticket they need. Despite the fact that our students come from low income neighborhoods, they manage to prove how high achieving they truly are. The growth in their maturity is matched by their new sense of determination to further explore the world and make their own lasting impression. The success of this program is epitomized in their final research projects that not only are factual, but have a personal element to them as they implement personal accounts of what they saw and studied on their tour. I will be working closely with four students who will be comparing the coastlines of the Atlantic in New York versus those in Portugal, and how the bio-diversity is vastly different despite sharing a body of water.
Our students want to travel to Spain and Portugal so they can understand how the world operates outside of what they have always known.
This is not just funding a trip, but instead sustaining a program with measure success. 100% of students that have traveled abroad from our school have gone on to college and are continuing to succeed. Please help keep this program alive.
