My students are curious, active learners. The Osmo Gaming System is an ideal blend of technology and hands-on learning. We tried one Osmo last school year; it was one of the most popular LMC activities. We can quintuple the fun and learning by acquiring Osmos for all five LMC iPads.
My students are expanding their digital learning toolkit every day, and this school year brings new enthusiasm and the promise of the best learning yet!
My students are elementary aged and are looking for ways to become more agile and resilient learners. About half of the families in our school live below the poverty line, and our school is committed to providing all students with opportunities to become ready for college or careers of their choosing.
Screen time is best advantaged by purposefully providing exciting, engaging and creative learning activities. I've learned through experience that the Osmo Gaming System is a very effective way to have 2-3 students work together to solve intriguing problems. It allows both physical hands-on materials to be used along with the iPad, in a social learning (or individual) context.
My Project
The Huegel LMC is becoming part Makerspace this school year. This means that students will have the opportunity to explore and learn using a wide variety of high-tech and low-tech materials (in addition to online resources and actual books, too). The Makerspace will have many learning options, and I am very hopeful that I can provide several Osmo learning stations in the LMC Makerspace. The one Osmo I had last year was extremely popular, and I would like to expand that opportunity.
I am also very excited to be partnering with the Tangible Interaction Design and Learning Lab at Northwestern University this year. TIDAL is donating several sets of Strawbies!, a tangible programming game that uses iPads and Osmos. Players use handheld pieces to program instructions for an on-screen character, Awbie.
Osmos + iPads + Huegel Students + LMC Makerspace = Innovative Learning and Growing
Whether we're talking about the 500 students that visit the LMC during the week, or the REACH classes that will take advantage of our newly remodeled LMC and Makerspace.
Donations to the Osmo in the LMC Makerspace project will change our students lives for the better in many ways. They will learn be able to leverage digital learning, hands-on learning, and social learning into one exploratory experience.
