Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How many times have you heard that there are two sides to every story? Getting students to understand history is tough, having them analyze is it even tougher, getting them to analyze it from two viewpoints is difficult without the primary documents that compares the issues.

We have students from a variety of backgrounds, who are in a variety of places in life.

In one class alone, I have English language learners, military family members, Advanced Placement, Special Education, and IB students, and sole supporter of their families. Money should not limit education. Many of these students come from low income homes, where the family cannot provide for things beyond the essentials. The students have not be placed in a position where they must analyze the past. This is essential in raising their knowledge of the past as well as their communication skills.

My Project

Students do not get to venture out past their living rooms to peer into the past. They think they know what happened in the past because they have seen it on TV. They don't realize that in order to truly understand the past they must read the words of those who lived it. Opposing Viewpoints is a set of books that introduces the students to the important historical topics as presented by those who lived it. Primary documents put the students in the moment. Opposing Viewpoints puts the students in the argument. These books will allow the students to read what was being thought at the time the events were occurring and analyze information from both sides of the argument in order to draw their own conclusions about the events of the past. This will allow them to write better essays and have more meaningful conversations about the events.

Primary documents, secondary documents, firsthand accounts, interpretation, analyzing, determining what the individuals who lived it thought and why.

This is what history class brings to our students. Our students are the leaders of tomorrow, it is essential that they understand the leaders of the past to avoid the mistakes of these who have walked before them. Our students need you assistance in being good leaders, knowledgeable leader. These books will bring the past into their lives.
