Do you remember huddling around one computer, trying to do a project that could be so much better with multiple computers? Our classroom is close to making this a thing of the past. We are three computers away from having one computer for each student in our classroom!
My students are a passionate group of students who care deeply about their education.
They have academic skills that would astound many people. Their creativity amazes me daily and I am excited to see what they will do with increased access to technology. Our students are immersed in the International Baccalaureate program in which they are asked to become leaders of their own learning. They are inspired to take action and make a difference in our world. Greater access to technology will increase their impact.
My Project
Students will use these Chromebooks daily. I teach 90 fifth grade students writing. Students will use Chromebooks every day to write persuasive, informational, and narrative pieces. Using collaborative software, students will receive real-time feedback on their writing from me, and from their classmates. Along with writing, students will take their ideas to the next level by using many Web 2.0 applications. For example, students will create digital video stories inspiring people to make changes to slow global warming. They will create websites to share their work. They will research and learn, but then they will take that learning to the next level to create content. This is just a small snapshot of the many uses these Chromebooks will serve in our classroom.
Having one computer per student will change the dynamics in my classroom.
Student learning will skyrocket. Students will receive higher quality feedback on their work, which will in turn increase their learning. They will have opportunities to share their learning and make a difference in their community. Technology alone does not help students. However, technology with a purpose can make a difference.
