According to research, reader's theater is an excellent way to promote fluency. Reader's theater encourages students to read with expression and to practice important fluency attributes, such as pause, inflection and intonation. It also allows students to tap into their creative side.
My students attend a Title One school.
All of our students receive free breakfast and 98% receive a free or reduced lunch. Many of my students do not have access to some of the things we take for granted: homes that are filled with books and other literacy-rich items, access to technology outside of school, or a parent that is willing to help with homework in order to reinforce topics learned in class. To add to this, my students have disabilities that seriously impact their learning. Still, they come to me each day with a smile on their face, ready to begin a new learning adventure.
I am requesting puppets that coordinate with popular children's books that I use in my classroom. These puppets will be used to retell and act out the stories we read in class. This will help my students develop much needed social skills as they work on reading with expression and fluency. My students are comedians! I know they would love the opportunity to ham it up while they practice their skills! I am requesting the following items for my classroom: Go Away, Big Green Monster! book and storytelling puppet kit. Most of my students are boys. Monsters are DEFINITELY on their "must have" list. Fairy Tales and Folk Tales Theme Box: My students are required to study fairy tales and folk tales this year. This item will allow my students to become more engaged with the story (i.e., act out the story, make characters from the story). From Caterpillar to Butterfly Big Book Activity Kit: This item will help students learn about life cycles (a science standard) while they practice reading.
Learning to read can be a difficult process, especially for students with special needs.
With your help, my students can use puppets while they practice reading and develop social skills. I want my students to love reading! Thank you for considering this project.
