Neil deGrasse Tyson said, "Scientific inquiry shouldn't stop just because a reasonable explanation has apparently been found." There are many things we can teach by simply telling students how something works. Science is something they can explore and make their own reasons about how the world works.
Once upon a time in Pre-K, twenty life long learners stepped in and fell in love with the world.
18 children two adults came together to explore the world of science together.
I consider every child I taught art, subbed for, had for the year, to be my student. I have eighteen curious four year-old students in my pre-kindergarten class and older ones who walk past my door and wave hello because I've made their day at some point.
I also have future students who aren't old enough to be in school yet, but one day, they will. I teach and live in a tight community where when I walk down the street I will most likely bump into a family I know.
Most of the children come from immigrant families who value education greatly. Most are from households who have two hard working parents, who do their best to provide the best quality of life for their children. I have been blessed with the opportunity to give their child the best, and I have no intentions of giving anything less.
My Project
Last year, my pre-k students missed out on having a science center to explore, observe, and come up with conclusions of how things work in the world. This year, I decided to do my best and work on opening a science center so my students wouldn't miss out.
In our school, pre-k does not formally have gym, art, music, or science. Gym, art, and music are subjects that can be embedded into our pre-k curriculum. Unfortunately, science is something that's more difficult to embed due to the lack of materials.
Our previous project requested awesome science kits that were, unfortunately, one time uses. I've requested items to put in our science center that have reuse value.
The Tegu magnetic blocks will allow our kids to explore magnetism. The gears will allow our students to learn about simple machines and how they work. And the animal toys will allow our students to classify animals based on characteristics and habitat.
By receiving more enrichment science resources for our science center, our curious students can explore the world scientifically.
Education is always lacking in math and science in the United States. If we nurture and cultivate curious scientific minds at a young age, there will be more interest in these subjects later on.
The interest in science is very present in our class, however, the resources aren't. Please help donate to this project. You're our only hope!
