My Students

I am constantly searching for innovative activities and methods to help my students understand complex science principles. They anxiously arrive on the first day of fifth grade, already dreading the standardized science test. I need a fun way to excite my students about science!

My students are wonderful, curious fifth graders in rural North Carolina.

Many of them do not even think about college as an option. This is not necessarily because they struggle academically, but because their families do not always see education as a valuable asset. In fact, recently when I talked about the availability of college, many of them stated that their parents did not go to college and therefore did not see a need for them to go to college. This is a sad decision to make at the tender age of ten. I feel a responsibility to change that mindset.

My Project

I am requesting an Ollie robot made by Sphero. This device will be controlled by our classroom iPad, which we already have. This device goes way beyond the capabilities of its predecessor, the remote controlled car. With this Ollie, we will experience the principles of forces and motion instead of reading about them. We will run the Ollie with and without the rubber tires to investigate friction. We will be able to take it outside and calculate speed. We will test inertia and Newton's Laws by programing Ollie to run in the classroom. Ollie's polycarbonate shell makes it durable for elementary students and will ensure that we will be able to use it for years to come.

What would you rather do, read a text book with accompanying videos or program and test drive a mini robot across the floor?

When students experience science firsthand, they become active learners and thinkers instead of passive seat fillers. It is my hope that when students get excited about learning, they will want to continue learning and will see all the possibilities and opportunities for their future.
