Old Florida: We Will Remember

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is engaging and fun but also structured. My students are learning to be active participants in problem solving and critical thinking. Often, our biggest challenge is self motivation, or the lack of it. We are learning to push through and make our best even BETTER!

My students are truly curious and interested learners.

They have such an authentic interest in our state's history and the development of so many things in our state including industry and tourism. My students ask the best questions and inquisitively wonder aloud about the how and why and what if. I am so excited to be working with such an outstanding group of intellects! My school strives to foster critical thinking and problem solving throughout the content areas and excellence is a common expectation. I am so very proud of my students and school.

My Project

My students need a copy of A Land Remembered. In 4th grade, we are studying Florida History and this novel will enable me to incorporate our SS standards with reading. My students will be using the story line of "A Land Remembered" to gain a deeper understanding of our state's history and development. We will use the genre of historical fiction to explore the development of roads, railroads, and other means of transportation, industry, and culture. We will dive into the Civil War and how it shaped the south in countless ways. In addition, we will learn about the struggles of the Native American people, the culture of pioneer life, and the development of citrus, cattle, and tourism in our state. My students will have a thorough understanding of our state's geography including major cities, rivers, and bordering bodies of water. This study of Florida history will enable my students to gain an authentic appreciation for the state in which we live while learning over two hundred years worth of history. Afterall, knowing from which you came is of paramount importance for moving forward.

Because of your donation, my students will understand the geography, industry, and development of the state in which they live.

They will have a deep understanding of how things came to be by studying the lives of those who came before us.
