My Students

Do you remember what it was like to have just one type of text to read in school? I have many chapter books in my classroom, but would like to expose my students to reading a news magazine, on their grade level. It would be fun for them to read nonfiction in a magazine, as opposed to just in a book

My students are eager 4th grader readers in North Carolina.

We have a wonderful school, but many of my students cannot afford the money that a student subscription for the magazine would cost. Our amazing PTA helps classroom teachers as much as they can, but there is only so much money to go around!

My Project

My students will be able to do all kinds of things with their magazines. Not only will they read and learn about everything from animals to famous people, but they will also practice some map skills, work on comprehension, and have the opportunity to help solve some "sticky situations" in which they can offer advice for a problem presented in each magazine. They will get to share and explain opinions about the weekly topic in the magazine as well. Perhaps some of them will become future members of the debate club in high school with this project!

Having a subscription to this magazine will broaden my students' knowledge and learning, as they will be reading about a variety of subjects.

It will allow them to read nonfiction in a different setting from a picture book or a chapter book, of which all students are familiar. Some of my students have never read a magazine before! How much fun it will be for me to expose them to nonfiction this way! Common Core is all about nonfiction, so this will help my students become successful readers.
