Nonfiction for Teens

My students need nonfiction books that catch their attention! Books like The Nazi Hunters, How They Croaked, and Ghost Liners show that nonfiction does not mean textbook

My Students

By the end of the year, I want all students I work with to love books, and not all students will learn to love books with novels.

I work with high school students who are reading at least 3 years below grade level.

This means that they are interested in history, science, etc but can't yet access that information from high school textbooks. They often think that reading is boring because they open a book from a teacher, can't follow it or read too slowly to get into it, and give up by the end of the first chapter. The school I work at is college prep, and over 75% of the students will be the first in their family to go to college. About the same percentage are at or below the poverty line (free or reduced lunch). They all deserve a high quality education and a room full of books they will love and can read.

My Project

At my school, we have SSR when all students read whatever they want. The problem is that they can only choose from the books we have and as a small school our collection is small, especially nonfiction. I find that many, especially young men, aren't drawn to the books we have since almost all are novels.

Every book we have is a chance for another student to fall in love with reading.

Every book is another chance for a student to learn something new by themselves, without the help of an adult. For the fact finding, information lover nonfiction books could be the tool!
