My Students

Too often, children with special needs are handed worksheets with very little opportunity for collaboration with their peers. I am working to change that pattern of learning and create a community of cooperative learners.

I teach at an amazing school!

My school is classified as high poverty because we have a large number of students on the free and reduced lunch program. My classroom consists of 14 awesome K-5th grade students. They have a wide range of disabilities but the majority of my students are diagnosed with Autism. They love to learn and are starting to build confidence within themselves. K-5th grade is such a magical and important time for them. It is during this time that their academic and social skill foundation is built. They need to have a solid foundation by the time the leave elementary school so they will be more successful in the future.

My Project

The introduction of the Common Core has asked all of us to think about how and what we teach. Special Education is no exception. I am also switching to the Common Core and that means big changes for my students. The Core asks for students to be able to work together cooperatively. These tables will help encourage my students to work together, communicate more, and build a cooperative classroom community. The learning opportunities are endless with the use of the round tables.

These table will have a huge impact on the classroom dynamic.

Students will be working cooperative and learning how to appropriately interact with each other. This most basic lesson will have an impact on their social development for the rest of their lives. Thank you for believing in them!
