My students need a wider selection of high interest leveled reading books in order for them to feel successful and motivated to read at their own levels.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom is full of opportunities to read throughout the day. It is highly encouraged with read alouds, giving them time to read first thing in the morning, listening centers, shared reading, and class trips to the school library where I advise students on their book selection.
The majority of my second grade students are English language learners.
They struggle in reading, and writing. Their reading ability ranges from Kindergarten to the middle of second grade. They are hard workers but some lack the adequate support at home. Our school recently underwent construction to accommodate our school's population. Currently every student is housed in a fixed classroom building rather than in a classroom portable. Our school climate is changing a lot due in part to a sense of pride in our new facilities and also with our students being encouraged to achieve and succeed in school. Our school is welcoming to our parents, students, and staff. Everyone is included, no one is left out. Our administrator works very hard and has motivated us all to strive for more, particularly in overall literacy.
My Project
My students will be able to use fiction and non fiction leveled books at their own individual level first thing in the morning during our Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) Time every day. This will encourage them to read, foster a love of reading, and create a habit of reading. They will also be able to have access to these books throughout the day as needed. The intended goal is to have every student read with strategic fluency and comprehension by third grade.
The donations would greatly improve my classroom because I will be able to provide adequate leveled books for all students to have equal access to.
It will change my students' lives by encouraging them to be life long learners. Reading everyday for 30 minutes or more will vastly improve my students' reading ability where they will ultimately read to learn rather than learn to read.
