This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am always excited about polishing my rough stones into diamonds. For students in high school, it sometime takes months to years. I take it one day at a time to polish each stone and I hope to make a difference each year. I may not be able to polish it into a diamond but it will be prettier.

Most of my students are Hispanic and African American.

I serve in an urban area where most students qualify for the Federal Free Lunch Program. We were also named in the local newspaper as one of the top 60 schools in our area. A majority of the schools screen students but our school is not a screened school. We are proud of our achievements. Our 4 year graduation rate is above 84% and we have AP Calculus, Psychology, and U.S. History classes. We have a theater program where we perform Broadway plays. We have sports programs in bowling, basketball, baseball, track, softball, and handball.

My Project

The keyboards and mice I requested are to replace damaged keyboards. The current keyboards are usable but a key or two often get stuck after being pressed. Example: The student presses the space bar once and and releases the key. The monitor will have more than 10 spaces and continues until the student re-taps the space bar again to stop it from being stuck. These keyboards and the mice wires were also locked under the security pads to prevent theft. Since the wires were too short, the wire stretches and scrapes against the metal while the students are using it. The wires are now frail and some wires are almost exposed. This damage is not due to abuse of the keyboard or damaged by spilling soft drinks. We have a strict policy of no food or drinks in the computer lab. It is just normal wear and tear from the everyday usage; plus incorrectly securing the keyboards and mice.

These new computer accessories will limit the frustration of students who sit at those computers.

They will allow these students sitting at these computers to experience the same experiences as other students in the class without these damaged keyboard and mouse nuisances.
